Into the Arctic with Cory Trepanier and the EX1

Canadian landscape painter, Cory Trepanier has spent three summers in the arctic, painting, photographing and documenting his experience on video. He chose the Sony EX1 as his high definition video camera after extensive discussion with Videoscope Sales Rep, Larry Au and hands-on sessions at Videoscope with Camera Technician, Phil Andrade.

THE ICEBERG
Video has become an integral part of his work. On his website, Cory explains. “I love to mix in filming on my treks as there is just no possible way to paint everything I see. Yet all these experiences while traveling feed my art and help me to know my subject more intimately. Not only does this lead to documentaries, but playing the footage itself in the studio while I paint brings back memories of being there.”

THE CAMPSITE
Cory also uses his EX1 to do time-lapse photography.

Here it is capturing the campsite set-up, including the electrified polar bear barrier encircling the tents.

THE SUN IN THE CAMERA
This photo of backlit grasses, shot into the sun, is actually a still frame taken from the EX1. Cory has found that with some PhotoShop adjustments, the camcorder can create surprising stills.

CORY AT “CAPTURE AND CREATE”
In the true spirit of capturing and creating, Cory is discussing the use of his EX1 on this summer's 7-week High Arctic expedition and presenting some outstanding clips. You can see him on December 2nd, 2009 at the Sony Event.
